So you want to learn to play guitar but you don’t know what the best guitar lessons for your type of learning ability.  It’s not a difficult process when it comes to making that decision if you have the right information. First let’s discuss what the different types of lessons are.

Listening to records (mp3’s) and trying to emulate the songs and reading books or getting free information online is the way to go.  This method is certainly not the best method to use for a variety of reasons.  First and foremost, there is nobody to correct your mistakes (and you will make them).  Therefore you are prone to develop bad habits that will become very difficult to break later on.  You have to make assumptions about the information you receive, again, because there is nobody to tell you any different. Private Guitar Instruction:

This is one-on-one instruction from a guitar instructor, usually done in weekly sessions (once a week) for approximately 30-60 minutes.  This can be expensive but it is the only method that stands a chance of keeping you focused when you decide to slack off.  One on one instruction is the preferred method, but it’s not always the most convenient due to other activities, scheduling, etc. If you stay focused this is the best guitar lessons you can get.

Video Guitar Instruction:

These are comprehensive instructional packages you can find in stores or online.  The major benefit to these is that you can learn at your own pace and spend as much or as little time as you want without feeling pressured by your instructor.  You can also “go back in time” to re-learn things you may have forgotten.  They provide great reference points for your learning, and they offer both audio and visual markers.  You get to see and hear the lesson as many times as necessary to absorb the information. They can accompany private lessons and together this is probably the best guitar lessons and quickest way to learn.

So which method is the best?  I hate to be anti-climactic, but the answer is, it depends.  It depends on you and what your goals and aspirations are.  Are you ready to take on the regiment of a private instructor?  If you purchase a comprehensive package, will you use it?  If you answered no to both of those then the best method for you would be the self taught route, as it is free and unconditional. So really the best guitar lessons are down to individual preferences.
