There are only a few simple rules you need to follow to master the various skills on the guitar. These are the basic things you must do to learn how to play the guitar.

  • Stop mastering your mistakes!
  • Start out slow and build up your speed
  • Choose effective exercises, and
  • PRACTICE!

To learn how to play the guitar you must stop mastering your mistakes:

This is very important to understand.  Getting good at being bad is NOT your goal! Learn proper techniques and put them to practice. If it sounds good, it is good. But if it sounds bad, guess what?

Start Out Slow and Build Up Your Speed to learn how to play the guitar:

This is the key to learn how to play the guitar successfully. I can’t stress this enough. USE A METRONOME when playing scales. Nobody cares how fast you can play if your timing is off.  Play your scales over and over at slower tempos until you master them at that speed and THEN increase the tempo.  By doing this you will learn how to play the guitar crisply and cleanly in perfect timing!

Learn how to play the guitar by Choosing Effective Exercises:

Not every exercise you do will be productive for you. You want to balance your practice time with exercises that address your weaknesses as well as your strengths.  You will not benefit from being good at one thing and bad at several others.   If you are progressing with your scales, but your chord transitions are weak, then take the time to play chord progressions (using a metronome of course), for learning guitar to improve and master that skill.

Practice:

How to learn how to play the guitar is with practice. I don’t think I need to say that twice. Very simply put, if you don’t practice you will never acquire the skills necessary to be a proficient guitarist.  You don’t need to put in 6 hours a day, but you do need to be consistent with your efforts.  Like everything else it’s a learning process.  The more you do it, the more natural it becomes and you will retain the knowledge and skill levels necessary to progress as a player.

If you were to interview any of the great guitar legends they would all tell you the same thing. Practice!  I have personally watched interviews with Paul Gilbert, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani where they talk specifically about using a metronome to master picking and timing skills. I certainly wouldn’t argue with the kind of advice they used to learn how to play the guitar.

It’s time for you to stop reading and pick up that guitar.  Follow these simple guidelines because the world is waiting for another guitar legend and it might just be you! Do it now learn how to play the guitar.
